Show Me Shorts Film Festival: Listen Up

I am an arthouse (film) girl; so naturally when the opportunity arose to attend ‘Show Me Shorts’ Film Festival at Capitol Cinema (previously Charlie Greys), I went. I enjoyed the short films very much. This Neo-Greek building is slightly dated; however still beautiful. The wine list is better than I expected, not bad for $9. The foyer was filling up with people by the minute; the atmosphere was friendly and eclectic, all demographics in the audience. Doors open, everyone scurried for their seats: grand and deliciously comfortable with ample leg room.

The screening ‘Listen Up’ has a run time of 79 minutes and we’re told in the programme “These short films have tales to tell from the margins of society.” Can’t wait; I love great storytelling. The music video “Cry If You Want To” by Mulholland (NZ) was definitely an ‘intergalactic’ experience with visual intoxication. “The Last 40 Miles” by Alex Hannaford was an animated American film, featuring ‘Ronald’ who was on death row, who travelled with two prison guards to the execution chamber. He reminisced about the ‘what ifs’ while in transit. Extremely gut-wrenching and captivating, based on a true story. “The Phone Call” by Mat Kirkby was a conversation between a helpline call centre woman called Heather, and the man on the other end of the phone, gave a fake name: Stanley (Jim Broadbent). I felt what ‘Heather’ felt: desperate to know what was wrong and why he was unhappy. This UK film was dramatically complex when their truth fuelled friendship; for the duration of the phone call. Isn’t it amazing how strangers can turn your life upside down? I hung on every word and hoped for a good outcome – brilliant film. “In The Rubbish Bin” by Riwia Brown was another animated NZ film, about a child called Pippa who spent her birthday with her teddy bear, Chubby. Pippa ended up in a rubbish bin to shelter from the rain. This NZ film is an intense roller coaster of emotions in 4 minutes. “Box Of Sound” is an American music documentary by Chuck Przybyl who creates music from his environment and circuit benders reinvent cigar boxes into synthesisers. Incredibly fascinating, with a touch of pizzaz. “Toilets” by Gabriel Bisset-Smith is a UK film about three characters who continually meet up in loo’s over a period of time. Two women, and one male who party, experiment with drugs, sex, friendship and support each other through life lessons: Comical, light-hearted and human. “Sounds Perfect” by Allan George is a NZ mockumentary about the adult film industry. Dave is the audio enhancement engineer who is extremely creative when recording ‘sex’ sounds. Highly entertaining, with much hilarity from the audience. Last up “Condom” by Sheldon Lieberman is an Australian film about a 6yr old boy who finds a used condom and wants answers from his Dad. Absolutely laugh-out-loud. I think all parents will embrace this footage and smile. What a successful screening: insightful, dramatic, hilarious and brave.

Review: First Scene (Fancy Dress)

Are you having a fancy dress party? This is the place to venture to – if so. Word. Whether it’s an Elizabethan gig and you’re looking for ruffs, pantaloons, jerkins, corsets, queens & kings wigs – they have this covered. Or maybe you’re after Bollywood attire? I have indeed hired ruffs, tutus, props, wigs and costuming from First Scene. It’s rather overwhelming place to visit – so make sure you ask someone for assistance – if you’re short on time. I particularly like the selection of false eyelashes, theatre makeup and their shoe selection. All the staff are suitably friendly and helpful. Based just over the hill from Kingsland’s Main Street (shops and cafes) so very convenient and centrally located with parking right outside the building. Cool. Majestic. Transformative. Check it out.

Interview with Y&T: Fashion Designer Yuka O

1. When/why was Y&T founded?

Y&T started with the intention of raising funds for the tragic earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Fashion is what I love and know – so naturally this is what I could contribute to make this happen. My husband Tristan and I worked on our first range with all the proceeds going to aid. Yuka&Tristan was founded in 2011, April.

2. Where do you get your inspiration?

Anything that gets me interested at any given time, which then becomes my inspiration/concept to develop the range – architecture, paint, books, design, music etc. Also, I deal with very beautiful fabric – I often get inspired by that too.

3. Have you always loved fashion?

Yes. Always. x

4. What is your go to magazine?

I love Japanese fashion Magazines: Ginza, Fudge Internatinal – The Gentle Woman, Numero, Vogue NZ – Home

5. Have you had any Y&T collections in ‘NZ Fashion Week’ or offshore catwalk? Future plans?

I haven’t thought about doing catwalk into NZ fashion week yet – however I’d definitely love to experience this, if the opportunity arose. I have some exciting news to be revealed soon… (but can’t tell yet) so please stay tuned ! via /yukaandtristan – facebook / @Yuka&Tristan – twitter / #yooksasyuka – instagram

6. Who would you (really) like to wear your brand?

Tilda Swinton

Whittakers – I choose by label 🙂

My young children who try to tell me stories about their (daily) adventures, mostly about their school endeavours – those cute explanations are the most gorgeous of things.

Social Media Bullying

20140320-105243.jpg

Last night I attended #smcakl (Social Media Club, Auckland) event to hear a panel discuss “Is Social Media Anti-Social?”

What do you think?

There was a lot of talk about Charlotte Dawson’s passing and her experience with cyber bullying, on the Twitter platform.

Question: When you become famous or successful, do you somehow get more haters?

I think so, unfortunately. The forum talked about (personally) moderating your content, brand management, the pitfalls of social media and the accessibility of voice, to all.

Some people choose to reveal everything they do via social: take pictures on Instagram, microblog on Twitter, post updates on Facebook and film on SnapChat.

Where does it all stop?

Having a digital footprint is essential in today’s world, however you need to manage the content, how you communicate to followers and most importantly, don’t take the feedback too harshly. Human beings sometimes speak with no filters, is that okay?

In conclusion: social media is modern communication in the online world. Just don’t forget about the offline relationships and networking events, that keep us real.

#Yelping Gin & Tonic

20140202-190429.jpg

Do you drink gin? Well if you don’t – you should.

After attending the #yelp event yesterday, hosted at #tinytriumphs in Devonport, I was seriously defibrillated (not literally).

The West Winds Gin and East Imperial Superior beverages are “the bomb”.
There have two different flavours to choose from: “The Sabre”, 40% ABV (Alcohol by volume) which has an “undercurrent of citrus with a dominance of juniper, followed by the classic coriander seed.” Or go for the “The Cutlass” which is 50% ABV: handcrafted and delicate for the seasoned gin drinker.

Both smooth drinking, low sugar content, won lots of Gold medals and made in Australia!

Tiny Triumphs is one of the smallest bars I have (recently) acquainted, in the heart of Devonport: stylish, Al fresco drinking, with service to boot.

The “Yelp Elite” community basked in the sunshine, enjoyed sipping on G&T cocktails, munching on wood-fired pizza, and yelped out until the sun went down.

Bliss.

Yelp perfection.

#Givingshoesday and #yelp

Another sterling and stupendous ‘Yelp Elite Event’ held at Jetset Bohemian, in the hip spot of Grey Lynn.

A team of awe-inspired yelpers each donated a pair of second-hand sneakers or $10 for #GivingShoesDay #GivingTuesday to send some relief to the victims of the Philippines Typhoon #TyphoonHaiyan

Bird on a Wire was present with their offerings of ‘Korean BBQ Chicken Roll’ and the classic ‘Bird On A Wire Chicken Roll’. What can I say: Scrumptious!!!! Thanks Sophie!

Also Rochfort Rees wine, that I will admit I had not heard of, until now! Sampling the super premium Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris was a delight! The virtual winery whose philosophy “is to make wine that is simple in its complexity.”

Simple yet perfect.

Jetset Bohemian opened late for the yelpers’ pleasure: beautiful vintage pieces, scarfs, hats, you name it! I adored their newsprint-like carrybags, very cool.

What a night of yelping!

I Am, Who Are You?

“Let me look sometimes for the goodness in me, and judge me not”. – Arthur Miller

No matter how many times you tell yourself, to not judge a ‘book by it’s cover’, we still do. When you walk down the street, and you see the homeless person on the pavement, with their signage ‘Help me, I need a bed for the night.’ Does your heart bleed, or are you sceptical, that it’s a con?

When I get dressed everyday – I do it for me. Wear what I want. Do you do that? Or are you worried about how the world perceives you?

Just the other day I was watching a program, on how employers discriminate people, for having front teeth missing. If you are client-facing, there is an expectation to always look presentable and well groomed with no warts, no yellow teeth and no missing limbs.

Sometimes it is difficult to be human – that is why you (should) never judge yourself.
