Father Rabbit Co-Op Event: Wine & Chocolate

Does a “wine glass” make all the difference when drinking red or white wine? 
Conclusion: Yes, 100% when it’s Plumm glassware.

I attended Father Rabbit’s 1st Co-Op event hosted by Claudia ZinZan; Johnny from Red & White Cellar who showcased the stunning Plumm glassware with delicious NZ wines from Lake Hayes, Quarter Acre & Amisfield. Who knew pouring Chardonnay into a ‘Plumm’ White(a) glass would alter the aroma and taste opposed to a White(b) glass? Gobsmacked. Really.

My personal favourite was Plumm glass Red(b) with the Pinot Noir (tasting) which dazzled and delighted my palate.


Bennetts (chocolate) of Mangawhai didn’t disappoint -suitably milk or dark chocolate that complimented the wine pairings with gusto.


What an education. What fun. ‘Father Rabbit’ exceeded my expectation to experience something distinctive. From now on – I can appreciate a Plumm wine glass in an erudite way. My friend and I purchased a few ‘must-haves’ before dashing off into the Jervois Road. Looking forward to the second Co-Op, it can’t come soon enough. 

Theatre review: ‘Gorge’ by Virginia Frankovich & Phoebe Mason

  

Walking into a ‘fairyland’ of gluttony made me reminisce my childhood birthday parties. A space over-flowing with green jelly, decadent cupcakes, salty popcorn, chelsea buns, chocolate cornflake slice, iced-pink biscuits & sugar aplenty – a feast for queens and the audience, of course. I did not see the first season of ‘Gorge’ that showcased at Auckland Fringe Festival in March 2013 – however it was worth the wait. ‘Gorge’ is storytelling at its finest – about gluttony. Virginia Frankovich and Phoebe Mason were majestically outstanding as they played different characters, engaged with the audience, stimulated our imagination and questioned our relationship with sugar. Apparently ‘we are what we eat’. I love sugar – don’t you? Give me some tiramisu any day.  I applaud the ‘Gorge’ girls. See you again in 2016.

Yelping @ The Kapiti Store With Wild Side Cider

Happiness is cheese, right? Last night I attended the “Yelp’s Powerhouse Pairing: Kapiti & Wild Side” event which was outstandingly sumptuous. I had never even heard of ‘Wild Side Cider’ until yesterday; now it’s my favourite (low alcohol) beverage. No spoilers – however the winning cider/cheese combination (for me) has to be ‘Wildberries’ paired with glorious grilled (Tuteremoana Aged Cheddar) cheese. Just wow. I then sampled the refreshing ‘Feijoa & Passionfruit’ cider with Kanuka Waxed Havarti. Apparently this is the most popular cider, however it is a little sweet for me, just saying. The Havarati was extraordinary: rich, dense & creamy. Next up is the ‘Strawberry & Lime’ cider with Kikorangi Blue. This cheese is my favourite, by far. Smells divine & is explosively flavoursome. ‘Blackberry & Plum’ cider with Tuteremoana Aged Cheddar was delightfully paired with fruity & sharp flavours to satisfy. Lastly ‘Apple & Pomegranate’ Cider poured over Spicy Apple Crumble ice cream was orgasmically exciting. I wanted more – a lot more. Meg from ‘Kapiti’ was extremely erudite about cheese, which made me smile ear-to-ear. Andy from ‘Wild Side’ knew a thing or two about cider – loved their logos and each back story behind the animal – especially the ram. There was also a special treat on offer from ‘Chuffed’: Ginger crunch, chocolate fudge and gluten-free bread I think! Truly a flawless ‘Yelp’ event that showcased some of the best & ‘hot’ NZ brands in the market.   
    
    
 

Photography Project: Four Corners of New Zealand 

  
Recently I went to the opening of #fourcournersofnz by Richard Hodder: photography (at its’ absolute best) featuring landscapes of rich and wholesome ‘Kiwi’ land. By that I mean – Richard has captured the idyllic surfing waves in motion’, the uninterrupted countryside, majestic lakes, rugged ‘off the beaten track’ roads to paradise from Cape Reinga, Northland to Lake Hawea, Otago. Allpress roastery was brimming with friends & strangers eager to see what lined the walls. The ‘open’ and ‘limited’ edition works are available for sale from $300 upto $1350 (The Scoop @Allens Beach) to the general public. There are 23 works on exhibition from 15 – 25 July. I found out about this extraordinary photography project via Instagram @inthedrink. You need to go before it disappears – just saying. 

Yelp Event: #Aucklandmade With “Bonnie Oatcakes” at The Cheese Room

      

Recently I attended the much anticipated second event for #Aucklandmade – in conjunction with Yelp Auckland, ‘Auckland In A Box’ and Bonnie Oatcakes. This startup began a few years ago – founded by Morgan Claire Maw. These wheat & dairy-free oatcakes have no added sugar and taste wholesome & delectable. The Yelpers sipped complimentary Huia Brut & Huia Chardonnay from Marlborough which I’d never had the pleasure of tasting until now: sumptuous. ‘The Cheese Room’ is truely an orgasmic experience for all cheese-lovers & enthusiasts alike. I indulged in heavenly Smoked Paprika, Canterbury Linseed & Orginal Oatcakes with lashings of goat, cheddar or blue cheese. Morgan shared her entrepreneurial, engaging story about the small beginnings of ‘Bonnie’ making oatcakes in her own kitchen to now stocking into 60 NZ select supermarkets, delicatessens, Artisan markets & specialised foodie stores nationwide. Now ‘Bonnie’ is in my pantry instead of buying my weekly ciabatta. Sold: hook, line & sinker. 

#SMCAKL: The Social Marketplace

 

What social media channels do you use? How do you monetise your platforms? At what stage can you measure conversions? These questions were put to the panel of social media savvy entrepreneurs & start-up founders last night at Social Media Club, Auckland. The panel of speakers: Makaia Carr (Motivate Me), Ken Brickley (BuddyBid), Wendy Thompson (Socialites) & Alex Mackrill (GrabOne) voiced their opinions on what has worked for them on brand strategy, business growth, customer engagement & innovative marketing on social. I learnt that New Zealander’s love and engage with Facebook more than any other social media platform & is the most successful for monetisation. What about Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat & Pinterest? Apparently, these platforms are still in there infancy in NZ and most of us now have a smartphone, which has revolutionised the way we communicate. Jam Mayer was the MC for the evening: articulate & erudite on social. Sarah Evans (Semble) was the shiny new thing (brand) in the room – I agree. What is Semble? “It’s NZ’s mobile wallet where you can pay for things using your phone.” Presently only available on Android. Amazing concept – who needs a purse or wallet (anymore) when you can pay with Semble? Impressed. This event was attended by up to 300 people – monetisation on social is a ‘hot’ subject – the present, our future.  

Review: First Scene (Fancy Dress)

Are you having a fancy dress party? This is the place to venture to – if so. Word. Whether it’s an Elizabethan gig and you’re looking for ruffs, pantaloons, jerkins, corsets, queens & kings wigs – they have this covered. Or maybe you’re after Bollywood attire? I have indeed hired ruffs, tutus, props, wigs and costuming from First Scene. It’s rather overwhelming place to visit – so make sure you ask someone for assistance – if you’re short on time. I particularly like the selection of false eyelashes, theatre makeup and their shoe selection. All the staff are suitably friendly and helpful. Based just over the hill from Kingsland’s Main Street (shops and cafes) so very convenient and centrally located with parking right outside the building. Cool. Majestic. Transformative. Check it out.

Have you tried #hoptsoda?

After attending another enjoyable, vibrant ‘Yelp Elite’ event last night, I was lucky enough to sample some clean, fresh, non-alcoholic soda/s in various flavours: Salted Lychee, Pear & Basil, Watermelon & Mint, Elderflower & Herb. Hopt only hit the market about three months ago and is ubercool. There were scrumptious canapĂ©s for each sampled beverage: mini potato cakes topped with feta and pea mash, rice-paper filled with pork and Asian vegetable, sashimi, and bruschetta with haloumi. Stand-out catering by Quay Street Cafe. Bravo. I loved the Hopt soda ‘Elderflower & Herb’ the most, especially with gin! The Yelpers made their own Hoptails, (soda, white spirits, citrus & herbs) demonstrated by Ryan – the dapper brand ambassador for Hopt. Available everywhere from 1 October!

Interview With Roccabella: Vikki George

1. When/how did you discover your ‘love’ of jewellery?
When I was a little girl, I loved going through jewellery boxes of my mother’s and my grandmother’s – really anyone who would let me look and play. Each box contained different types and styles of jewels, that expressed who they were at the time. I would love to play dress ups with them, but the best thing (of all) was each one had a story, and a memory to go with it. I like to remember this when I am designing a collection. I hope that my creations have stories told about them, and create amazing memories for the person wearing “Roccabella”.

2. Where do you get your inspiration?
The world around me. If you take the time to look around, you can find the most amazing and fascinating things, you just have to open your eyes. For example my latest collection INK: a tattoo/jewellery collaboration. I was going to see this guy (I had my eye on) who was getting a tattoo, done by Brock Fidow. I was looking around his studio and was blown away by his talent. We started talking about relocating from Christchurch after the earthquakes, and our design process. It just came to me that a tattoo/jewellery collaboration needs to happen and Brock agreed. Now we have worked together in creating this seamless collection.

3. Do you have a ‘special’ piece of jewellery that you wear or gifted?
My diamond circle pendant my mum gave to me – I wear it everyday.

4. How did you come by the name “Roccabella”?
We inherited it when we purchased our Christchurch store in 1999 which we lost in the earthquakes. I love the name – it means beautiful rocks!

5. Tell me about your last exhibition?
It was amazing! Held at Lot23, for my collaborate collection ‘INK’. I collaborated with Brock Fidow who is a talented tattoo artist. The collection was a seamless combination of ‘Western traditional tattoo’ and ‘artisan jewellery’, all proudly made here in NZ. We hung the jewellery on a (majestic) stand, hung from the roof. I wanted it to be a discovery, so we used Fresnel lenses which magnified the jewellery in a trippy-kind of way. Sam E was our DJ who created an amazing vibe.

6. Who would you like to (really) ‘wear and/or endorse’ your work?
Russell Brand – love his style.
Lorde – she is amazing.
Natalie Portman.
Jonny Depp
Banks, she is also amazing.

7. Any influences?
Oh yes, I love the creative talents of Solange Azagury-Partridge, she blows me away with her designs

8. What is your favourite colour?
I don’t have one, I love all the colours of the rainbow.

9. Do you eat breakfast?
It’s the most important meal of the day! Can’t beat Rye bread toasted with avocado. Tomato, lemon juice, and a sprinkling of Basil, finished off with a grind of salt and pepper. Oh, and a cup of coffee.

10. What makes you smile?
My daughter Lilly, she amazes me and makes me smile everyday. Love – out of the blue, and music which can instantly transform your mood.
